The driver rankings of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2019

20. Daniel Ricciardo DNF               Renault 

Daniel Ricciardo struggled a bit in Qualifying, he qualified twelfth. He could start eleventh because Giovinazzi had a grid-penalty. Then at lap 31 he had a weird crash with Kvyat at turn 3. Ricciardo tried to overtake Kvyat but he locked up and went straight ahead. Kvyat also had to go straight ahead to prevent a crash. Daniel tried to lose as little time as possible and drove backwards. But Kvyat was still there, and Daniel drove into Kvyat's car. After that he had to retire. He gets a grid penalty for Spain and two penalty points on his superlicence.

19. Daniil Kvyat DNF                Toro Rosso 

Daniil Kvyat had a crash in FP2, but in Qualifying he was very good. He qualified sixth. His first stint in the race wasn't very good and he dropped out of the top 10. But his second stint was very good and he was in the top 10 again. Until lap 31 when he collided with Ricciardo. It wasn't his fault, he drove a good race. 

Rate: 7.5/10

18. Romain Grosjean DNF                  Haas 

Romain Grosjean had a difficult weekend. He qualified seventeenth. In the race it wasn't any better. It became even worse because he had to retire due an issue with his brake pedal going to the floor.

Rate: 6/10

17. Pierre Gasly DNF             Red Bull 

Pierre Gasly had to start from the pit-lane because he missed the FIA weighbridge at FP2. He had a really good start of the race and he was quickly back in the top 6. But then at lap 39 he had to retire with a broken driveshaft.

Rate: 7/10

16. Robert Kubica                         Williams 

Robert Kubica crashed in Qualifying, so he started from the pit-lane. In the race he got a drive-trough penalty because Williams put him into the pit-lane too early. He finished sixteenth. 

Rate: 6/10

15. George Russell                        Williams 

George Russell missed the whole Friday practices because he drove over a drain hole cover and that damaged his floor. In Qualifying he still managed to Qualify above his team-mate. He finished fifteenth in the race. 

Rate: 6.5/10

14. Nico Hülkenberg                       Renault 

Nico Hülkenberg had a difficult Qualifying and qualified eighteenth. In the race it didn't get any better, he finished fourteenth. It wasn't a good weekend for Renault. 

Rate: 6/10

13. Kevin Magnussen                         Haas 

Haas didn't have the pace this weekend, Kevin Magnussen still managed to get into Q2, and he qualified fourteenth. In the race it wasn't much better, Magnussen finished thirteenth. 

Rate: 6.5/10

12. Antonio Giovinazzi            Alfa Romeo 

Antonio Giovinazzi out-qualified his team-mate Räikkönen this weekend, he qualified eighth. But due a new control electronics he had to start seventeenth. He drove a strong race and finished twelfth. 

Rate: 7/10

11. Alexander Albon                Toro Rosso 

Toro Rosso looked strong all weekend but in Qualifying Alexander Albon couldn't make it into Q3, he qualified thirteenth. He could start eleventh because of the grid penalty's of other drivers. He just missed out on points. 

Rate: 6.5/10

10. Kimi Räikkönen                 Alfa Romeo 

Kimi Räikkönen had a really good Qualifying and qualified ninth. But he had to start from the pit-lane because the team replaced his front wing with a different spec to that used in qualifying. He drove an amazing race and drove from the pit-lane to P10. 

Rate: 8/10

9. Lance Stroll                        Racing Point 

Lance Stroll didn't have the best Qualifying, he couldn't make it into Q2 and qualified sixteenth. He drove a good race and he finished ninth. 2 points for him. 

Rate: 7/10

8. Lando Norris                             McLaren 

Lando Norris had an really good Qualification and made it into Q3 and qualified seventh. He drove ahead of his team-mate Sainz almost the whole race but then they decided to pit for soft tires and he dropped behind his team-mate. He couldn't get the tires working like he would but still managed to finish eight. 

Rate: 8/10

7. Carlos Sainz                              McLaren 

Carlos Sainz qualified eleventh, he was unlucky with the yellow flag in Q2. He could start tenth because of the penalty from Räikkönen. In the race gained a few places and he finished seventh. 

Rate: 7.5/10

6. Sergio Pérez                      Racing Point 

Sergio Pérez had an amazing weekend in Baku. He qualified fifth. At the start of the race he overtook Verstappen for fourth place. 5 laps later Verstappen overtook Pérez again, and after that Leclerc also overtook him. But he managed to keep the sixth place, a very good weekend for him. 

Rate: 8.5/10

5. Charles Leclerc                            Ferrari 

Charles Leclerc was fast in the practice sessions, and it seemed like he was going to take pole. But then in Q2 he crashed in the wall. He could start eight because of the grid-penalty's of other drivers. He had a very long first stint and he lost much time with that. After his pit-stop he dropped to the sixth place. He overtook Gasly but couldn't close the gap to Verstappen. He also got the fastest lap of the race. 

Rate: 7.5/10

4. Max Verstappen                      Red Bull 

Max Verstappen qualified fourth. At the start of the race Pérez overtook him but 5 laps later Verstappen overtook Pérez. After he pitted he closed the gap to Vettel but then the virtual safety car came and his tires cooled off too much and he was unable to press the attack on Vettel. He didn't risk anything and accepted P4.

3. Sebastian Vettel                            Ferrari 

Ferrari looked very strong in the practice sessions, but in Qualifying Mercedes was stronger again. Vettel qualified third. His first stint wasn't very good and he couldn't keep up with the pace of the Mercedes cars. His second stint was better but he couldn't close the gap to Mercedes. The maximum for him this weekend. 

Rate: 8/10

2. Lewis Hamilton                      Mercedes 

Lewis Hamilton qualified second and just missed out on pole. At the start of the race he said he gave his team-mate Bottas too much space in the first corner. At the end of the race he came close to Bottas but he couldn't overtake him.

1. Valtteri Bottas                         Mercedes

Valtteri Bottas had an amazing weekend in Baku, he got pole-position. And at the race he kept his position and won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. For the fourth time in a row an 1-2 for Mercedes. This is the best start of a season for a team ever in the whole history of Formula 1.
